Programs of Excellence
While the state of South Carolina provides the operating funds for the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, the Foundation provides the funding for the School’s unique pre-professional programs, such as the Visiting Artist Program, for which the state cannot pay. These programs serve as a crucial element and raise the caliber of the Governor's School experience by providing the additional margin of excellence for the School’s curriculum.
The Visiting Artist Program enhances the School’s master-apprentice approach to teaching and plays a significant role in all five art areas. Visiting artists are paid and housed during their stays in Greenville, and these expenses are covered by the Foundation.
Last year, we brought in 21 renowned artists whose visits were supported by a grant the Foundation received from the Surdna Foundation in New York. The value of working with successful artists is of paramount importance to the students’ pre-professional training, and we are working hard to continue to provide the finest education of its kind for South Carolina’s aspiring young artists.
Some of the professional Visiting Artists who have worked recently with the students include:
- Oscar Nominee – Actor David Strathairn
- Tony Nominee – Broadway, theatre and television actor Andre’ DeShields
- Cellist Zuill Bailey
- Opera singer Myra Cordell
- Oscar Winner – Pulitzer playwright John Patrick Shanley
- Violist Victoria Chiang
- Pulitzer poet Jorie Graham
- Pianist Donna Lee
- Dancer Viktor Plotnikov
- Dancer Marat Daukayev
- Mixed media artist Joyce Scott
- Actor, director and playwright Danny Hoch
