Congratulations to SCGSAH seniors Wonza Johnson and Jasminn Johnson who were both accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School! We're especially proud of our students and department as Juilliard's incoming class only had ten spots available for undergraduates this year.

Victoria is slated to perform at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, February 12, as a member of the American High School Honors Performance Series Orchestra. Her entry into this select group of student performers from across North America came after auditioning last fall, in which she was chosen as a Finalist based on the quality of her audition recording.

Pan, 15, is the daughter of Violet and George Pan. After Carnegie Hall, she will be next performing as a soloist in the Carolina Youth Symphony's Winter Concert at the Peace Center Concert Hall in Greenville, SC, on March 4.

We invite you to read the full feature on Victoria at HeraldOnline here.
On a very brisk day, one of our students stood at our entrance welcoming a large group of visitors. Wind was pushing against his face, but his smile remained radiant and his handshake firm. Someone suggested he put on his coat. He thanked them for their thoughtfulness, but said he was fine. Our visitors commented on the warm and positive welcome this young man offered. A great start to a visit to the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.

Of course, as you may have guessed, the young man didn’t have a coat. It was a luxury he couldn’t afford. But no one knew; he never mentioned it. He just wore a few more layers when it became too cold. As the President of this wonderful school, I didn’t want him to “just wear a few more layers.” To resolve this situation, I quietly turned to the Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation and asked for help. A warm coat soon covered his shoulders with no fuss, compliments of the Medici Student Aid and Enrichment Fund that provides urgent essential needs for our students.

Why do we care? This student, and so many like him, has great promise. He deserves a chance, an equal opportunity to fulfill his dreams. With your support, our Foundation’s Scholarship Fund underwrites his annual food fee because his family has no financial resources—their great resource is a talented, passionate young artist who wants to be the first in his family to attend college. Colleges in this state and across the country want him and his classmates—they are gems. Also, to help him look ahead to the realities of life as an artist, the Foundation brings guest artists to campus to mentor him and his classmates and discuss lives as professionals.

With your faithful support, we can put a warm coat on a student in need, feed a student when his family’s resources are exhausted, answer a student’s questions about life as an artist, and maintain excellence as our standard. Dr. Virginia Uldrick, Founder of the Governor’s School for the Arts has always passionately believed that we must look at a child’s value and what a child needs, and then meet that need. We never turn away a student because of the family’s limited finances. Your tax-deductible gifts sustain the Governor’s School and provide for life-changing experiences for our determined and spirited students.

We need your caring generosity to support our students through the Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation. A gift of any amount will be greatly appreciated and used wisely. I thank you for considering our request for your support, and the grateful smile on the face of our young man with a new coat is a reward beyond compare.

Sincerely,

Bruce R. Halverson, President
South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities

P.S. As you consider supporting the Governor’s School Foundation, please keep in mind
that we accept gifts of stock, and have planned giving strategies in place. Please call
